Welcome to a variety of series on this site. Each is a distinct approach, yet they all express a sense of wonder and, taken together, become a meditation on the veil between seen and unseen, questioning what is real.

In a departure from the mixed media abstractions of the past several years that used earthy textures and probed earthly elements, my 2015 sources are not on earth at all. The “Galaxies” series features paintings where figures engage with actual images from the Hubble Telescope. Drawings in watercolor, pencil, pastel and acrylic combine with photos of outer space.

Last year, my 2014 series, “The Long Thread,” contrasted silk with the rougher textures of string, twine and rope. Life and death emerged as themes as those pieces evolved beyond the form of paintings into large wall hangings.

Between 2011 and 2013, I explored earth’s vital energies: water, fire and air. “The Life of Water” interprets the power of water on raw canvas through abstracted imagery. “The Life of Fire” celebrates the creative force that explodes from the most destructive element with experimental textures including layers of transparent plastics. “The Life of Air” experiments further, with paintings on transparent silk where the motion of air flows through multiple layers.

In earlier works, “The Seekers Series” of scrolls and “The Sepia Series” of landscapes use a stain technique on raw linen in a monochromatic palette. Those paintings from 2007 to 2010 reach for order amidst wilderness, an underlying balance in the universe.

Throughout my series, my admiration for ancient Asian art is apparent. Often, the materials themselves, such as silk and rice paper, carry forward an aesthetic, as does the scroll-like way of hanging. But overall I intend these works to move beyond materials to a philosophical sense that suggests transcendence.
